Included are minutes, ledgers, journals, balance books, other bank records, and letterbooks (of J.H. Branch, Ezekiel Clark, John N.Coldren, Thomas J. Cox, C.W. Fracker and Thomas Hill). Also included are some unidentified records and items from the bank of the Iowa City firm Culbertson and Reno, the Johnson County Savings Bank, the Dallas County Savings Bank and the Kensett Bank.

Samuel Kirkwood served as a Republican state senator (1856-1859), Iowa governor (1860-1864, 1876-1877), U.S. senator (1866-1867, 1877-1881), and U.S. Secretary of the Interior (1881-1882, under President Garfield). In 1858 the Iowa legislature passed a banking law establishing a state bank. One of the bank's eight branches was established in Iowa City under the name State Bank in Iowa City, managed by Ezekiel Clark. After the national banking law went into effect in 1863 the Iowa City branch of the State Bank became the Iowa City National Bank.
